Bric-a-brac and rick-rack

With Christmas on my mind, I’m hitting up the local markets in the next few weeks unearthing thoughtful and unexpected gifts. We popped up to Rozelle Markets where I never fail to come home with something that poor Mossy shakes his head at. Today I got two heavenly metres of floral printed canvas fabric destined to be backed with pink jersey and fringed to become a throw rug for my couch. Can’t bear to give this one away, not when Mossy says it has nanna written all over it. Surely no one but Lady Hunt would appreciate as much and she has quite enough throw rugs. Sorry dear heart but you do. I also found a sweet little stall filled with antique home-maker bits and bobs and quickly purchased a pair of pre-war potato mashers and some vintage rick-rack for a craft project I’ve had sitting around forever.

This project is so quick and simple it took me a naptime to complete. I had some leftover oilcloth from a tablecloth I had made and I simply cut out four pieces 50cmx30cm to make some matching placemats.

I had just enough rickrack to edge the placemats which I did using a simple straight seam on the sewing machine in vintage blue thread. I’m mad for wooden cotton reels and have recently started using the threads from the hundreds I’ve collected over the years. The colours are so soft and silken, they are a dream to use and there is something so exciting about delving into the jar and pulling out just the right shade.

Ensure your rick-rack is lined up in the machine by manually lowering your needle before you place the sewing foot down. And that’s about as difficult as it gets, it’s a very calming project for a hot summer day. The appropriate wine match for Lady Moss was a crisp prosecco with just a hint of sweetness, a perfect drop for a twilight picnic at the outdoor cinemas where your new placemats will be the centre of envious attention. Which a lady always pretends not to notice non?
